On the evening of April 16th, the second session of Mingde Xinchuan Lecture in 2024 was held in Classroom 131 of our hospital. Professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Literature and Journalism at Sichuan University, PhD candidate from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and recipient of the Sichuan Provincial Talent Title, Song Yao, presented an academic feast for our students with the theme of "When Culture Meets Numbers: Theoretical and Applied Research in Quantitative Art". Nearly 80 teachers and students from our institute, the Yellow River Cultural Research Institute, and the Institute of Discipline Inspection and Supervision attended the meeting to listen. The lecture is hosted by Teacher Ma Cuixuan.
At the beginning of the lecture, Song Yao used a vivid and lively short film as a guide, combined with his laboratory work content, to explain how to study humanities and art from macro, micro, and meso perspectives. He revealed how digital humanities, as an interdisciplinary field between digital technology and humanities, can be studied using various computational tools and methods through in-depth analysis of multiple practical cases related to traditional Chinese culture.
Song Yao also explored how to analyze and understand movies from a data perspective, enabling students to have a deeper understanding of the organic combination of digital humanities technology and Chinese culture. He pointed out that the dissemination of Chinese culture is no longer limited to static paper-based carriers, but rather presents an active, three-dimensional visualization, and systematic image through digital carriers.
During the free communication session, Professor Song Yao patiently answered questions raised by students and teachers, including the commonalities and individuality of neuroaesthetics, the origin of calligraphy note taking projects, the use of color circles, and the relationship between empty lenses and cultural and economic factors.
The holding of this lecture not only provides a platform for our students to deeply understand digital humanities, but also opens a window for them to perceive the pulse of digital culture. Through Professor Song Yao's brilliant explanation, students have further deepened their understanding of digital humanities construction and the inheritance and dissemination of Chinese culture.
